Antarctic Sea Ice Area Anomaly

In 2023-2024, the Antarctic Sea Ice Area Extent fell below the 1980 and 2016 low points in the 43 year record, which began in 1978 with the advent of new satellite technologies.

Arctic 2023-2024 Summer Sea Ice

In early 2024, the Arctic Sea Ice Area Extent remained below the historical average (since 1978 when satellite technologies became available) in the data set. It has rebounded to above the level of of 2005 and 2006.

Global Sea Ice

Per NASA GSFC, a satellite-based data record starting in late 1978 shows that rapid changes have been occurring in the Arctic, where the ice coverage has been declining at a substantial rate, particularly in summer.
